My denture is loose, what can I do?

Custom Dentures in Winston Salem Dental Office

If your denture is loose, consider upgrading to an implant-supported denture or a denture reline

Visit Dr. Nelson at his Winston-Salem office. If you have loose dentures, you are not alone. It is a very common issue that affects millions of Americans.

Get an adjustment and reline procedure. Loose dentures can often be addressed by adjusting them, or with a special procedure called a denture reline.

Consider upgrading to an implant-retained denture. Dr. Nelson has extensive training and experience with dental implants to help retain dentures. An implant-retained denture will solve your issues and stay in place while you chew, talk, and smile!

Implant Supported Dentures

An implant supported denture, also known as an overdenture, is one of the best ways to restore your ability to speak, chew, and smile without worrying about your denture loosening.  Implant supported dentures are customized dentures that "snap" onto a dental implant to ensure a secure fit that won't become displaced.  Patients with implant supported dentures often remark that they are able to eat foods like steak, corn on the cob, and apples again!

What Are Some Benefits of Implant-Retained Dentures?

Dental implants offer several key benefits that denture wearers appreciate.

Attachment of dental implants to dentures.

After a short healing process, the dental implants are attached to the dentures with special connections.

Customization of retention strength.

The strength of the connection between the denture and dental implants can be customized for your specific needs and strength desires. The connections can be so strong that patients sometimes have trouble removing them! We will make sure this does not happen to your custom implant retained denture.

You will maintain them just as you would your regular dentures. The dentures need to be cleaned and removed at night just like normal dentures.

Ensure the implant connection stays strong and secure with regular check-ups.

The implant and denture “snap” together through a rubber ring that is in the inside of the denture. This ring can be customized to different strengths depending on your preferences. By design, this ring will wear out in 1-2 years. These rings are very easy and cheap to replace and can be done at our office in as little as 30 seconds.

Better chewing ability:

Dentures that are not displaced by harder foods will give you the function and confidence to enjoy more foods. Dental implants create a secure connection between your jaws and dentures.

More confidence speaking and smiling:

Many patients worry about dentures dislodging when talking or speaking in public. Dental implants will give you the confidence to know that your dentures will not move when talking, eating, or smiling.

Preservation of bone:

Implants stimulate your bone just like natural teeth which retain the bone of your jaw.

Affordable and quick

Often, your existing dentures can be used to attach to your new dental implants which saves time and money.

Ease of removal:

The dentures can be removed at night for easy cleaning of the dentures.

The Clock Is Always Running with Dental Cavities

Diagram showing a tooth with a cavity, winston-salem nc

Have you ever regularly driven on a street with a significant pothole? If you have, you'll understand. What may have begun as a crack in the pavement, over time, becomes a gap that widens into a hole. Every time a car drives through it, the hole gets bigger. Eventually, it develops into a tire-popping problem that won't go away by itself; it has to be filled.

Cavities in your teeth work precisely the same way. They start small, a little pit in your tooth that will grow and grow if left ...

Denture Relines to Help Loose Dentures

Denture relines are indicated if you’ve had teeth removed recently. Sometimes dentures need a procedure called a reline. This is commonly needed if extractions were completed within a few months of getting your denture, as your bone and gum tissue will remodel and change shape slightly. This remodeling can cause your new dentures to become loose over time.

A simple reline procedure can improve the fit of your denture. The reline can be performed by our office which customizes the inside of your denture. This is much cheaper and quicker than designing a new set of dentures. The good news is that the aesthetic aspects of the dentures are unchanged during this process.

*Fees are quoted from our office's January 2021 fee schedule and are subject to change.  Changes in fees are typically nominal (less than a 3% adjustment).
