Get an adjustment and reline procedure. Loose dentures can often be addressed by adjusting them, or with a special procedure called a denture reline.

Implant Supported Dentures

An implant supported denture, also known as an overdenture, is one of the best ways to restore your ability to speak, chew, and smile without worrying about your denture loosening.  Implant supported dentures are customized dentures that "snap" onto a dental implant to ensure a secure fit that won't become displaced.  Patients with implant supported dentures often remark that they are able to eat foods like steak, corn on the cob, and apples again!

Then, find out if an implant-retained denture is the right choice for you. Dr. Nelson will perform a thorough exam of your mouth and current dentures. Our office has the latest 3-D imaging ability which ensures the lowest of radiation possible. This 3-D image allows for the proper sized implant to be virtually planned which leads to a quicker, less invasive surgery and higher success.

What is the dental implant process for loose dentures?

Evaluation of current dentures. If current dentures are satisfactory, then they can be used. If they are not, then new dentures are made by our expert Winston-Salem based dental lab.

Simple and fast placement of dental implants. The dental implants are placed during a simple, fast, and comfortable procedure.

Attachment of dental implants to dentures. After a short healing process, the dental implants are attached to the dentures with special connections.

Customization of retention strength. The strength of the connection between the denture and dental implants can be customized for your specific needs and strength desires. The connections can be so strong that patients sometimes have trouble removing them! We will make sure this does not happen to your custom implant retained denture.

You will maintain them just as you would your regular dentures. The dentures need to be cleaned and removed at night just like normal dentures.

Ensure the implant connection stays strong and secure with regular check-ups. The implant and denture “snap” together through a rubber ring that is in the inside of the denture. This ring can be customized to different strengths depending on your preferences. By design, this ring will wear out in 1-2 years. These rings are very easy and cheap to replace and can be done at our office in as little as 30 seconds. 

What if I want to upgrade to an implant-retained denture, but I’m nervous about getting a dental implant?

Most effective, pain-free, and up-to-date numbing techniques: During any treatment, Drs. Nelson and Benton pride themselves on using state-of-the-art techniques to deliver painless numbing.  We utilize the latest and most effective techniques for anesthesia.  

Calming nitrous oxide (laughing gas): For patients with anxiety, nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” will help eliminate nervousness and promote a more calm, tranquil state of mind. 

Stress-free sedation dentistry: Dr. Nelson is one of the only general dentists in the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad area who is trained and licensed in all forms of sedation dentistry. Patients are always given the option to choose dental sedation during their procedures to guarantee a stress-free experience. How much does an implant-retained denture cost?*

The fee for an implant-retained denture varies depending on how many dental implants are recommended to support your denture.  Typically, four dental implants are recommended for an upper implant retained denture.  Two dental implants are usually recommended for a lower implant retained denture.

Denture Relines to Help Loose Dentures 

Denture relines are indicated if you’ve had teeth removed recently. Sometimes dentures need a procedure called a reline. This is commonly needed if extractions were completed within a few months of getting your denture, as your bone and gum tissue will remodel and change shape slightly. This remodeling can cause your new dentures to become loose over time. 

A simple reline procedure can improve the fit of your denture. The reline can be performed by our office which customizes the inside of your denture. This is much cheaper and quicker than designing a new set of dentures. The good news is that the aesthetic aspects of the dentures are unchanged during this process.
