Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
A stress-free experience for the nervous patient. Patients who are nervous or anxious about their dental visit are encouraged to consider sedation dentistry. If you elect to have moderate sedation dentistry for your dental procedure, you are guaranteed to have a stress-free experience with no memory of the procedure.
Other benefits of sedation dentistry:
- Elimination of all dental anxiety
- No memory of the procedure
- Elimination gag reflex
- Very safe and effective
- Enables all treatment to be completed in one visit
Can all of my treatment be completed in one visit?
Yes, all of your treatments can be done at once. Sedation dentistry allows all treatment needs to be addressed, with no memory of the dental visit!
Sedation dentistry also allows for longer appointments where all of your treatment needs can be addressed in a comfortable, anxiety-free environment. For patients with extensive treatment needs, typically those procedures are split up into multiple appointments. For nervous patients, this causes more anxiety associated with the time at the office and lost time at work.
Sedation dentistry allows Dr. Nelson to complete several hours of treatment at once. When you are finished, you will have no memory of the experience!
It can also be a more affordable option. Because all treatment can be done at once, sedation dentistry can be the most affordable option for patients who would otherwise have to miss work for multiple dental appointments.
What types of dentistry can be completed under sedation?
- Dental examinations
- Dental cleanings
- Root canals
- Dental Implants
- Extractions and bone grafts
- And many more!
Most dentistry procedures can be performed under sedation from examinations, cleanings, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, crowns, root canals, implants, extractions, bone grafts, and many more. Dental sedation ensures a comfortable visit with no unpleasant memories!

Forms of Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide is often referred to as laughing gas. It provides anxiety relief as the mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose during treatment. Most patients remark that they feel warm, cozy, and relaxed while on nitrous oxide. However, nitrous oxide does not “put you to sleep.” Patients are still awake during the procedure, and will still have a memory of the appointment. Nitrous oxide is best suited for mild procedures or those patients with very mild anxiety.
Oral sedation is when a patient is prescribed an anxiety-controlling medication (such as Valium or Xanax) before treatment is completed. Oral sedation is often unpredictable since many people have different tolerances to the medications. Some patients will be very relaxed and have little memory of the procedure and others will only experience slight anxiety relief.
Moderate Sedation or IV Sedation
This is Dr. Nelson’s preferred method of sedation. He is part of a small group of general dentists in NC (1%) that are licensed to provide this treatment.
Moderate sedation allows the sedation medicines to be delivered quickly and effectively through a small IV. Unlike oral sedation, IV sedation can be dosed specifically to your anxiety needs and tolerances for the medications. It is much safer and more predictable than oral sedation.
You will have no memory of the treatment performed during moderate sedation, which makes it an excellent choice for anxious patients. In addition to the sedation medications, pain relievers and antibiotics can be delivered to your body in a very quick and effective manner through the IV.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for sedation dentistry?
