Advanced Dental Technology

At Blake Nelson DDS, we believe the right technology doesn't just make dentistry more comfortable; it makes it more precise, more predictable, and more successful. Many of the tools in our office are ones that most dental practices in the Winston-Salem area simply don't have. From same-day, lab-quality crowns milled in-house to advanced 3D imaging and IV sedation for patients who need it, our investment in technology is really an investment in your outcome. Below is a look at what sets our office apart and what it means for you as a patient.

In-House 5-Axis Milling — Lab-Quality Restorations, Same Day

Once your restoration is designed, it's milled right here in our office on a Redon Hybrid Eco dry/wet 5-axis mill, the same caliber of equipment used by professional dental laboratories. This lets us produce crowns and other restorations to true lab-quality precision without sending your case out and waiting one to two weeks for a lab to return it. For many patients, that means a final, permanent restoration in a single visit instead of a temporary restoration now and a second appointment later

In-House 3D Printing

For patients who need a temporary crown, bridge, or restoration while their permanent piece is being finished, we 3D print temporaries in-house. Because they're custom-designed from your digital scan rather than hand-shaped chairside, our temporaries fit better, look more natural, and hold up better between visits than the temporaries used in many offices

Premium Restorative Materials: Emax & Katana Zirconia

The material a crown is made from matters just as much as how precisely it's designed and milled. We use two of the most trusted materials in modern restorative dentistry:

  • Emax (lithium disilicate) is prized for its lifelike translucency, making it an excellent choice for highly visible front teeth and cosmetic cases.
  • Katana Zirconia is exceptionally strong and durable, well suited to back teeth and patients who need a restoration built to withstand heavy bite forces.

Using both materials means we can match the right restoration to the right tooth, rather than defaulting to a single one-size-fits-all option.

Digital Smile Design & CAD Technology (exocad)

Every crown, veneer, and restoration designed in our office is planned using exocad, the same CAD software used by many of the world's leading dental laboratories. Rather than relying on a lab technician working from a physical impression days later, our team designs your restoration digitally, with the ability to preview and refine the shape, fit, and bite before it's ever milled. The result is a restoration built to laboratory-grade precision, designed with your bite and facial esthetics in mind from the very first step.

IV Sedation

Dr. Nelson is licensed to administer IV sedation, a level of training and certification that very few general, cosmetic, or restorative dentists hold. Most dentists who offer sedation are limited to nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") or oral sedatives. IV sedation gives us far more precise control over your comfort level during treatment, which is especially valuable for patients with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, complex or lengthy procedures, or difficulty getting numb with local anesthetic alone. It means you can have extensive work done in fewer visits, in comfort, under the direct supervision of a dentist trained specifically in this technique.

Digital Intraoral Scanning

We use digital intraoral scanners to capture a precise 3D model of your teeth in minutes: no trays, no messy impression material, and no gagging. A small wand simply glides over your teeth, and the scanner builds a highly detailed, color-accurate model in real time, right on the screen in front of you.

These digital scans feed directly into our design and milling workflow, which means fewer errors, faster turnaround, and a more comfortable visit from start to finish. Because the scan is so precise, crowns, veneers, and other restorations fit better on the first try, reducing the need for adjustments or remakes. The files are also stored digitally, giving us an accurate, permanent record of your teeth that we can use to track changes over time, plan future treatment, and coordinate more easily with specialists if a referral is ever needed.

CBCT 3D Imaging

Our in-office CBCT (cone beam CT) scanner gives us a detailed, three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw, and surrounding bone, far beyond what a traditional 2D X-ray can show. This level of detail allows for more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for implants, root canals, wisdom teeth, TMJ concerns, and other cases where precise anatomy matters, all without needing to refer you out for imaging elsewhere
