If you lose a filling or dental crown, you may experience sensitivity and difficulties chewing, so it's essential to seek treatment as soon as possible. Every case is unique, so depending on your needs, there are a few different treatment procedures Dr. Nelson may recommend for you. Here's what you should know.

Treating a Lost or Broken Filling

Replacing a lost filling depends greatly on the size of the filling we're restoring and the current state of your tooth. If the area is small and your tooth is in good condition, we may be able to restore your tooth with another filling. If the tooth is broken or decayed, or the filling we're replacing is large, you will likely need a crown to cover, strengthen, and rebuild your tooth.

A porcelain crown in Winston-Salem provides a durable and aesthetic option you can rely on for many years.

Treating a Lost or Broken Dental Crown

If you lose or break a crown, we'll need to replace it with a new one as long as your remaining natural tooth structure is healthy. Like most dental restorations, dental crowns wear and break down over time. Most crowns tend to last around 10 to 15 years with the proper care.

Preventive Care Can Help You Avoid Emergency Situations

Nothing is worse than having an old restoration or tooth break while you're out with friends or at work! Sometimes, these situations can't be avoided; however, with consistent preventive care, you may be able to avoid dental emergencies in Winston-Salem.

During your preventive teeth exam, Dr. Nelson will screen you for problems like gum disease or tooth decay that could result in an emergency. He also screens your current restorations for wear and breakdown that could be problematic.

If you're aware of these concerns ahead of time, you may be able to treat the problem proactively and avoid a tooth emergency.

Contact your Winston-Salem dentist at (336) 760-1277 if you have questions about fillings or crowns or if you're experiencing a dental emergency.
